Local families aid Ethiopian Jews
Africans will resettle in Israel

Two Cincinnati-area fathers are sharing a promise with their daughters as part of a worldwide effort to help Ethiopian Jews rebuild their lives in Israel.
Jim Cohen of Indian Hill and Mark Knue of Amberley Village left Friday with their daughters, Liza and Carly, for camps in Gondar and Addis Ababa in Ethiopia.
There they will help transport 150 of an estimated 20,000 remaining Falas Mura people, the country's last remaining Jewish community, to Israel.
Plans call for eventually resettling all the Falas Mura, who have suffered discrimination and abuse over the years in Ethiopia.
The weeklong mission is part of Operation Promise, the latest effort to raise $160 million to help Ethiopian Jews resettle in Israel.
"The world Jewish community has always looked out for its own," Jim Cohen said. "At a time when people are really suffering with really low employment rates and high malnutrition rates, these are people that really want to go home to Israel to resettle."
As a longtime member of the Jewish Federation who has gone on other missions, Jim Cohen said he especially wanted to share this experience with his 14-year-old daughter, Liza.
"The Jewish community tries to emphasize and carry on to its youth that Israel is there for Jews in need," Jim Cohen said. "They are always there for each other. That has always resonated with me and I want to share that with my children."
"I think it's great that these two fathers are bringing their daughters," said Danielle Minson, director of financial resource development for the Jewish Federation of Cincinnati. "They're going to be able to see something that is life-altering."
Minson will accompany the two families and nearly 100 other members from around the United States to Ethiopia, where they will assist in the relocation efforts.
"Personally, I believe in the work that the Jewish Federation does," Minson said. "I believe we're strengthening lives and I feel fortunate that I am able to align my personal values with my professional values."
For Mark Knue, the mission is a lesson about values for his 15-year-old daughter, Carly.
"In our family, we teach our kids that they're incredibly lucky to have the lives that we have," Mark Knue said. "I want her to have that ability to do good things for other people."
Stephanie Marks, an 85-year-old Holocaust survivor who lives in Wyoming, said she is proud to see a young person like Liza making a trip like this.
Liza interviewed Marks as part of a school project about the Holocaust.
"I know what it would've been like for my generation to have had a country like Israel come to our rescue," Marks said. "I hope that these people will find the same kind of peace and opportunity that I have here."
After arriving in Israel, the Ethiopian Jews will reunite with relatives there to start a resettlement process that could take years.
The mission, Jim Cohen said, is "to to have Americans, even beyond the Jewish community, realize that we are going here to rescue people in very difficult political and economical situations."
"These people can have a much better life if they go to Israel and I want to help," Liza said.
