E.ON to invest USD 5b to boost gas imports from Iran, Qatar

German energy giant E.ON will invest 5 billion dollars in the coming years to boost liquid gas imports from Iran and Qatar, aimed at meeting Germany's rising energy needs, E.ON's chairman of the board, Wulf Bernotat, announced in an interview with Berliner Zeitung newspaper published in its Saturday edition.
Pointing to the huge gas reserves of Iran and Qatar, Bernotat said, "Technological progress in gas liquefaction has made these reserves now economically usable. We want to join the liquefied natural gas (LNG) business wherein gas will not be transported through pipelines but via ships. It's extremely capital-intensive." The 5-billion-dollar investment project would include the construction of a liquefaction facility in the Persian Gulf region, raising the gas transportation capacities of ships and building a re-gasification terminal in the north German port city of
Wilhemshaven, according to Bernotat.
The head of E.ON pointed out that gas imports from the Persian Gulf would secure Germany's long-term energy needs.
He predicted that effective 2010 the European Union's gas demands would exceed its current transportation capacities.
"Without the reserves in Iran and Qatar, this gap would increase EU's needs to 25 percent by 2020," Bernotat said.
Based in the west German city of Dusseldorf, E.ON has a turn-over of 49 billion euros and employs 70,000 people worldwide.
