Anti-Jewish attacks down, but still high

Anti-Jewish attacks in Australia have decreased this year, but the latest figures show assault, vandalism, intimidation and harassment of the Jewish community is still 10 per cent above average.
Australia's peak Jewish body, the Executive Council of Australian Jewry (ECAJ), said it had received 332 separate reports of anti-Jewish incidents in the 12 months to September 2005.
This is lower than the 445 reports last year but still 10 per cent above the annual average of 301 since national figures started being collated in 1989.
Report author Jeremy Jones said that incidents recorded during the past year included arson attacks on synagogues, vandalism and Nazi graffiti on private property belonging to Jewish Australians, assaults on Jewish people, and anti-Semitic vandalism of Jewish schools and synagogues.
Newcastle Synagogue was subjected to anti-Jewish daubings, had its windows smashed and anti-Semitic posters glued to its exterior wall in April, Mr Jones said.
"We've had a decrease in the total number of incidents going back since 2002, which was a peak year for incidents, and that's welcome," Mr Jones said.
He said an alarming finding of the report was the "enormous amount of anti-Semitic invective on various internet discussion groups and bulletin boards".
"What it does demonstrate is that there are pockets within our community who have very hostile views towards Jews, which hopefully they won't act on," he said.
Anti-Jewish graffiti was recorded at a rate 39 per cent above average, but hate mail and threatening telephone calls were recorded at their lowest rates for 16 and 15 years respectively.
Abusive, threatening and other anti-Semitic emails sent to Jewish individuals and Jewish communal offices were received at a rate of more than four per week.
Mr Jones praised the speed with which community leaders and governments condemned anti-Semitism.
"What has been a big feature this year has been the speed and consistency of the condemnation of anti-Semitism by Muslim leaders and Christian leaders in this country, which is very encouraging.
"There's also been strong government statements condemning anti-Semitism and we feel that is playing quite a role in bring the number of attacks down."
