The stress associated with being the parent of a child with a craniofacial anomaly could affect the child's development, according to a new study.

Craniofacial anomalies (CFA) are a diverse group of deformities in the growth of the head and facial bones that are present at birth. Research suggests the initial shock of learning your child has a CFA triggers parental stress. Dealing with negative responses also adds to the stress of a parent. A less active and responsive style of parenting is also attributed to those parents who have children with CFAs.

In order to determine the link between parenting stress during infancy and psychosocial development in children with CFAs, researchers assessed the answers submitted on Parenting Stress Index/Short Form (PSI/SF) by 47 parents. Forms were completed twice throughout the study; once when the children were 24 months or younger and again when they were 24 to 46 months old.

Data showed parents experiencing high parental stress levels during their child's infant and toddler stages demonstrated clinical levels of total parental stress and dysfunctional parent-child interaction. Toddlers of these parents exhibited higher levels of maladjustment compared to children whose parents experience stress only during the infant stage.

Researchers suggest guidance geared towards helping a parent of a newborn with CFAs understand the condition could help offset developmental problems.
