With a nod to the design of Apple's iconic iPod, the Micro weighs just 85g and Nintendo claims it is the smallest console in the world.

The company's marketing director Jim Merrick said: "We're not only competing for people's money, we're competing for share of pocket.

"You're only going to carry so many devices, and obviously you're not going to give up your mobile phone."

The recommended price of £67 will be the same as Nintendo's current console, the Game Boy Advance SP.

Gamers can also look forward to the game Nintendogs, in which owners talk to and stroke virtual canine pets.

Nintendogs, featuring a choice of golden Labrador, Chihuahua and miniature dachshund, will go on sale on October 7.
