For couples struggling to have a baby, choosing the right fertility centre can be a difficult decision.

So to help, Britain's regulator has published a comprehensive guide to fertility services in the UK.

The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority's (HFEA) Guide to Infertility

2005 allows prospective parents to see how often treatments such as IVF work at individual clinics.

Previously the HFEA has only provided national figures, although some centres have published their details independently.

The new guide shows results vary widely, with some centres operating at more than twice the national average success rates.

HFEA chairwoman Suzi Leather said one in seven people had some difficulty conceiving and the guide would help them make "better informed choices".

She added: "With treatment costing many thousands of pounds, it is right that the people paying for the treatment - the individual or the NHS - should get a proper sense of what they are paying for."

The guide particularly aims to "cut through the jargon" and explain what different procedures are available to overcome fertility problems.
