Men have a need to be chatty while women prefer to let their fingers do the talking when it comes to mobile phones, says research.

Males preferred the more personal natter over the phone while females resorted to using text messages.

Almost 40% of women relied on texting to keep in touch with friends, compared with 25% of men, said market analyst firm Mintel.

But 30% of men preferred to actually phone someone and did not worry about the bill, around double the 17% of women who did.

Mintel senior market analyst Ellen Shiels said: "The fact that women are more likely to be texters could suggest they now see mobile phones as extremely useful social tools.

"They can stay in touch with each other and make arrangements to meet without getting drawn into a long conversation.

"Psychologists have also suggested that texting allows people visual anonymity and the opportunity to express themselves through a potentially different persona."

The research also showed that almost two-thirds of children aged under 15 owned a mobile phone, a figure rising sharply to 90% for 13 to 14-year-olds.

But the poor parents still paid the cost, more than half 11 to 14-year-olds left the bills to mum and dad as did 64% of seven to 10-year-olds.
