Are there any herbal remedies for erectile dysfunction?

The research isn't encouraging. Preliminary research on a few herbal supplements — such as DHEA, ginseng and propionyl-L-carnitine — suggests that they may provide benefit as an erectile dysfunction treatment in some men. But no adequate clinical trials have evaluated either the effectiveness or the safety of supplements in treating erectile dysfunction.

In addition, one popular herbal medicine called yohimbe — which is marketed as a sexual stimulant — can be dangerous if used in excessive amounts. Adverse side effects include high blood pressure and heart failure.

Occasional erectile dysfunction is normal. But if erectile dysfunction persists for longer than two months or is a recurring problem, see your doctor for an evaluation. Discuss with your doctor your questions about using herbal supplements. He or she can help you weigh the pros and cons of herbal treatments for erectile dysfunction based on your medical history.
